Who We Are

Shades of Amboseli is a community-based organization (CBO) dedicated to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Maasai people, conserving the unique biodiversity of the Amboseli ecosystem, and building resilience against the impacts of climate change. Located in the heart of southern Kenya, near the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro, we work hand-in-hand with local communities to create a sustainable future for both people and wildlife.  


Our Story

Founded by Kenneth Ole Saei, a passionate conservationist and community leader, Shades of Amboseli was born out of a deep commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the Amboseli ecosystem and its people.

Our mission is to safeguard the Maasai indigenous tangible and intangible cultural heritage, strengthen community resilience to climate and global change, and protect the wildlife and natural resources of the Amboseli ecosystem. Through innovative and inclusive programs, we aim to empower the Maasai community while promoting environmental conservation.

Paul Lovat-Smit

Co-Founder

Paul Lovat-Smith brings over 35 years of experience as a geoscientist and a deep passion for wildlife conservation to Shades of Amboseli. Based in East Sussex, UK, Paul combines his scientific expertise with a commitment to organic farming and sustainable practices. Inspired by his father’s legacy of conservation work in Amboseli, Paul is dedicated to helping the Maasai community build resilience against climate change and preserve their cultural heritage.

Kenneth ole Saei

Chairman and CEO

Kenneth ole Saei is the founder and driving force behind Shades of Amboseli. A seasoned community leader and conservationist, Kenneth has over 12 years of experience serving as the Secretary of the Olgulului Group Ranch, where he championed education, wildlife conservation, and community development. His initiatives include establishing schools, promoting eco-tourism, and advocating for the rights of the Maasai people. Kenneth’s vision is to create a resilient Amboseli ecosystem where people and wildlife thrive together.
